Maviddapuram Kandaswamy Temple Annual Festival
Come and partake in the 25-day annual festival (Thiruvilla or Perehara) of Maviddapuram Kandaswamy Temple. This is the only Saiva temple built in stone to have survived the Colonial rule. Along with Naguleswaram temple and Keerimalai Springs, this Temple creates the religious triangle of mystics and healing. This is said to be the place where a princess’s ‘horse’ face changed in to human as a result of her worship. The Maviddapuram Kandaswamy Temple is dedicated to the god of love and valiancy, Lord Kandan or Katharagama Deviya. Interestingly, it was built by 2 young lovers. The ancient carvings of the young lovers can still be seen in the temple. On each day of this annual festival the deity will be taken in procession on a different vehicle. The Flag hoisting festival signifying the beginning of the Thiruvilla, falls on the 26th of June. The Chariot festival will be on 19th of July.
